Innovation seems to be the inherent order of the day in almost all sectors. Innovating means modifying existing elements, introducing novelties, thus generating a <\/span>positive change <\/span><\/b>in the state of things. Among them, these optimizations can be applied to architecture through improvements in the materials used for construction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And a great novelty in the construction sector is <\/span>transparent wood.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This material has been created by a <\/span>team of scientists from the <\/span><\/b>KTH<\/span><\/b><\/a> Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm<\/span><\/b> (Sweden). The researchers began to chemically eliminate a substance called <\/span>lignin,<\/span><\/b> a component of wood that makes it rigid and dark in color since it prevents light from passing through. By removing the lignin, the wood loses its characteristic color and becomes a <\/span>white material.<\/span><\/b> That’s why it was necessary to take a step further and other researchers from the University of Maryland added <\/span>epoxy<\/span><\/b> or <\/span>polyepoxide<\/span><\/b> to wood, a thermosetting polymer that hardens when mixed with a catalyst or hardener agent. In this way, they achieved <\/span>transparency <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>resistance,<\/span><\/b> and a product twice as strong as organic glass and more resistant than conventional glass.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What advantages does the color change bring?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Contrary to what you might think, transparent wood is a 100% environmentally friendly material.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The production of transparent wood generates <\/span>less carbon emissions into the atmosphere,<\/span><\/b> which is why it is <\/span>more sustainable than the manufacture of glass and crystal,<\/span><\/b> materials with which it shares similar visual characteristics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, it works as a <\/span>thermal insulator:<\/span><\/b> thanks to its density it keeps the interior temperatures constant. And, on the other hand, it accumulates and preserves external heat. It is undoubtedly a highly <\/span>energy-efficient<\/span><\/b> material.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Transparent wood is a good alternative to glass and plastic because it lets light through and that would entail<\/span> less use of artificial light.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Real uses to this variation of wood<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scientists believe that this invisible material could be used in the manufacture of <\/span>car windows<\/span><\/b> or to <\/span>replace any other transparent glass surface.<\/span><\/b> It could also be used to <\/span>make advanced solar panels.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
